Sarah Cant
Sarah completed her B.A. at Sarah Lawrence College in New
York, then her M.A. and Ph.D. in French Literature at Oxford before training as
a milliner. After finishing her training at Kensington and Chelsea College in
2002, she first worked for Stephen Jones Millinery, then set up her own label in
2003. She has exhibited at The Chelsea Craft Fair, Origin, and London Fashion
Week. She is a member of both the Gloucestershire and Devon Guilds of Craftsmen.
Sarah creates millinery and mixed-media textiles from
her studio in the Cotswolds. She has a background in costume design for
theatre, dance and circus, and an interest in textile-based installation
work. Her millinery combines traditional techniques with sculptural shapes
and unusual materials such as paper, metal and wood. The one-off hats and
headpieces are witty and elegant, designed to be as striking off the head
as on. Her textile jewellery develops many of the shapes and textures
found on her hats, particularly flower motifs. Recent mixed-media textile
work explores the themes of memory and nostalgia through image, stitch,
text and found objects. This work includes wall hangings, delicate
camisoles, cushions and other decorative objects.
